Editor’s note: Sleep training is not a one-size-fits-all. What works for this couple’s baby may not work for yours. Consult your pediatrician or a sleep coach.
In a vlog entitled, “How We Got Avianna To Sleep Through The Night,” new parents Vin Abrenica and Sophie Albert shared their process in sleep training their 6-month-old, Avianna, or Ava, for short.
“Sobrang nag-iba na yung routine namin,” Sophie says. “I usually prepare her food na the night before.” Sophie brought out mashed broccoli with apple puree and heated it for Ava’s breakfast in the video.
Here’s what Ava’s day looks like according to the couple.
- 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. – wake up and give Ava milk
- 8:00 a.m. – Ava’s breakfast
- 8:45 a.m. – done with her bath time
- 9:00 a.m. – first nap
- 10:00 a.m. – wake up and give Ava milk
- Noon – second nap (about 2 hours)
- 2:30 p.m. – wake and give Ava milk
- 4:00 p.m. – third nap
- 4:30 p.m. – wake up and give Ava milk
- 5:00 p.m. – dinner 6:00 p.m. – bath time
- 6:30 p.m. – give Ava milk
- 7:00 p.m. – time to turn off the lights
Vin and Sophie also have a bedtime routine for Ava’s naps. It consists of the following:
- Turn on the air conditioning.
- Darken the room with curtains
- Read stories with Ava.
- Put Ava in her sleepsuit
- Leave the noise machine on
Vin sings to Ava when it is his turn to put the baby to sleep. In the vlog, he sings one of Tarzan’s OST, “You’ll Be in My Heart.”

In the video, Ava grabs hold of Vin’s shoulder, trying to stand up. “All she wants to do is play. Sobrang struggle neto, guys. Di ba parang gusto mo siyang laruin? Parang sinasabi niya na, ‘Daddy! Daddy, play with me!’”
Sophie admitted sleep training was difficult for her at first. “The hard part was to just do nothing because I have actually never let Ava cry for more than a minute. I’m the type who panics every time she cries.”
“Usually, ito yung pinakamahirap na nap,” Vin says on Ava’s second nap of the day, which occurs at noon. They set up the room again and began the bedtime routine after making sure she was well fed.
“This is the hardest so far na we had to go through, and watch her cry for how many minutes na wala kaming gagawin,” Vin confessed after having to sit down and wait with Sophie outside the room until their baby stops crying.
“It’s heartbreaking, alam mo yun, to see that. Hoping and praying to her guardian angel na sana to give her comfort para makatulog na siya.”
Vin expressed his concern on Ava’s sleep patterns. “Medyo paatras kasi si Avianna. Kung kailan tumatanda, paikli ng paikli sleep time niya at night, so nagwo-worry kami na baka she’s not getting enough sleep. And also for us!

Sophie added their surprise on the first night of sleep training. “Because we realized na baka kami yung reason kung bakit siya nagigising so often kasi the first night, we put her on the crib, so syempre matagal, umiyak siya. But she was able to sleep at 7 p.m. She woke up na mga 4 a.m.”
“It’s the first night na we had sleep at all!” Then she went on to say that on the second night, she woke up at 6 o’clock. “So she doesn’t need me or Vin to pat or rock her to sleep.”
In the vlog’s description, Sophie and Vin thanked a sleep coach for helping them. “We couldn’t have done this without Chesca of @lullababyph who is a certified sleep coach. She guided us and held our hand every step of the way.”
