What To Do When Your Son Refuses To Eat Rice: Moms Share Practical Tips

  • We know how vital it is for our kids to get the nutrients they need for their growth and development. So it worries us when they don’t want to eat their toddler meals and become picky eaters

That’s the problem one mom faced in our Facebook group, the Smart Parenting Village. She asked for any suggestions from fellow member-moms about her son who did not want to eat rice.

What to do when your child only wants biscuits and doesn’t eat rice

“Yung 3-year-old son ko hindi siya pala-kain ng rice. Nagme-meryenda lang siya ng biscuits. I’m so worried kasi no rice the whole day. Any suggestion?”

As always, many moms gave their experience-based tips. Here are a few that may apply to your picky eater as well.

Don’t give your child snacks when it’s almost their mealtime

“Ang biscuit mabigat sa tiyan [kasi] full of carbs kaya kung snack niya ganyan mabilis ma-full [so ang] tendency hindi na kakain. What we do [is] small frequent snacks or mas advanced ko pinapakain ng rice para hindi na maghanap po ng snack.” – Ro-Ann S

Give your child a variety of snacks that are healthier than biscuits

“Take out the biscuits. Pag nagutom yan at walang ibang choice na kainin, kakain at kakain po yan. Mahirap lang sa una, but you’ll get there.” – Jenina T

Offer alternatives to rice that give the same or even more nutrition

“I gave alternatives to rice in the ‘Go Food’ family like nilagang kamote, nilagang saba or fried versions of those. Pati potatoes, mais, rolled oats, pasta na iba-ibang klase, pancit, sotanghon and miswa. She snacks on fruits or mga lutong-bahay. Tiyaga lang po talaga and explore more. Walang pilitan at kusa po ‘yan lalapit sa pagkain.’ – Grace MB

“Kung ayaw ng rice, mag-offer ka po ng ibang foods [like] potato, kamote. Ipagluto mo ng banana loaf, carrot loaf, gawa ka squash puto, sopas. Pwede mo po partneran ng mga grapes, apple, milk.” – Raz G

“Toast with peanut butter and scrambled eggs for breakfast, then veggie/fruit shakes for dinner. Tapos cookies/fruits for snacks. You can substitute rice with pasta or wheat bread, or kahit ulam lang talaga.” – KC AW

    Make mealtimes enjoyable

“Try to make food more appealing. More colors po. Pwede din mag-introduce po ng fruits and veggies. Play with food or sabayan nyo siya kumain.” – Geri M

“Nung ni-try ko ilagay yung kanin at konting sabaw sa manual food processor. ayun nakakadalawang bowl ng kanin yung anak ko minsan. Nilalagyan ko rin ng half egg per bowl yung sabaw at rice then dinudurog ko nalang ng tinidor.” – Katrina RB

“Pedia advised to include healthy smoothies mainly vegetable blend with few fruits, no sugar or honey, or milk only to add sweetness. Then, nilalagay ko sa pouch para makain nya aside sa offered solid [food]. Then fresh juices, pulp fresh extract and not yung binibli na packed.” – Lalaine E

    Be extra patient!

“Try nyo lang po subuan. ‘Pag oras po ng kainan, make it a habit na haharap din sya [sa ‘yo] and give him/her his own plate. Lagyan nyo po [ng] konting rice at gagayahin kayo.” – Heidi LGF

“May nabasa akong ganyan sa isang libro about kids. Ang sabi dun ayon sa isang pedia, karamihan sa 3-4 years old mamili talaga sa pagkain kasi yan daw yung stage na nagsisimula na sila mamili nang gusto nila base sa panlasa. They are developing their decision-making. Para ‘di ka mag-worry, I think i-encourage mo sya. Wag mo sya pilitin.” – Len MB
