Looking For The Right Diaper Size For Your Baby? Here’s A Chart To Help You

  • Finding the right diaper is a popular topic among members of Smart Parenting Village’s Facebook page. When one of them asks a question or solicits suggestions, many respond based on their own experiences.

A mom once shared this problem involving her two-year-old: “Pag malaki ba ang diaper possible na magle-leak lalo? XXXL na kasi ‘yung sa baby ko pero nagle-leak pag gabi. 2-3 times kami nagpapalit, start po ng 6 p.m. to 9-10 p.m., palit po, ‘tapos 2-3 a.m. palit ulit.”

Majority of the respondents said the choice of diaper size is wrong. One of them pointed out, “Too big. My baby is 6 months old. Weighing 8.5 kilos. He is using medium. Sakto lang. No leak. Magdamag din ung diaper niya. He’s using Pampers Baby Dry.”

Another one opined, “Maybe big pa po. 15 kgs si little one using XXL din, 22 months old. Pero now during sleep na lang s’ya mag-diaper. Nag-potty train na kami pee and poop. Malaki pa po ‘yan and malamang nasa quality din pang 18+ kg kasi 3XL. Try n’yo po XL lang muna, 12 to 18 kgs po ‘yan. Subok ko na po ‘yan.”

A third one agreed,  “Parang masyadong malaki, mommy. Baby ko po is kaka-1 year old lang and 13.6 kg siya. We are using XXL sa Pampers.”

Weight is a better assessment than age

Experts point out that babies grow at a different pace and others may stay in a certain size for a longer time, that’s why age is not the best gauge in buying diapers. They add that weight also translates more accurately into the dimensions of the baby, such as the baby’s thighs and bum.

Use the diaper chart for general guide

Considering that babies come in all shapes and sizes, the size chart is just a general guide to help parents. It’s still highly recommended to continue some practices, like putting two fingers inside the band of the diaper and making sure it’s not too loose for baby.

When referring to the diaper chart, experts suggest to follow the recommended weight range. They explain that one of the key reasons why babies experience leakage is because of the wrong diaper size.

Additionally, there may be other consequences that can happen when the diaper does not fit wel. Physical effects are red marks on baby’s skin, while emotional repercussions include negative impact to baby’s overall comfort and mood.

Buy in bulk only after transitioning to a new size

Though there’s no available data yet on how long a baby stays in one size because babies also grow at a different pace, it’s safe to buy in bulk only after your baby transitioned to a new size.

But remember that if the baby’s weight is already reaching the upper limit of the weight range, it would be more prudent not to buy in bulk since the baby will likely need to transition to a new size soon.
