Turon, Cow, Scholarships! The Best COVID-19 Vaccine Incentives So Far

  • From free turon to winning a cow to raffling off a house and lot, COVID-19 vaccination incentives and gimmicks are either getting crazier AND more attractive.

Big grocery chain SM Supermarket will offer free turon (with langka, most importantly) for vaccinated Filipinos who will buy a minimum of P250 worth of groceries.

In the municipality of San Luis in Pampanga, the town mayor said they will raffle off a live cow each month starting September 2021 until August 2022 under the “Baka Para Sa Bakuna” mass vaccination project.

“One resident may win a cow each month, which they can butcher up and sell or share with their families and neighbors,” Mayor Jayson Sagum told Sunstar Pampanga. Time will tell if the residents say “moo” or “boo.”

Setting the bar higher is Rep. Camille Villar. She has launched the “May Bahay sa Bakuna’” raffle for 18 and above residents of Las Piñas who will get the jab. These residents, however, have to pay for their vaccines. Apart from the house and lot raffle, a pangkabuhayan package and motorcycle will also be raffled off monthly.

Vaccine hesitancy is not only a phenomenon in the Philippines but in the U.S. So many states and cities there are also leveling up their vaccine incentives. From free donuts from Krispy Kreme, incentives are now getting more and more irresistible.

In Ohio, the state government announced the first winner of a $1M lottery under its “Vax-a-Million” weekly raffle. We’re guessing the 22-year old Abigail Bugenske, who won last May 27, is still in a state of shock from this unbelievable news.

In New York City, Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced the “Get A Shot To Make Your Future” program. Under this, 50 full scholarships will be awarded to children between 12 and 17 to encourage them to get their COVID-19 vaccinations.

According to news reports in the U.S., incentives include “$100 payments to state employees who elect to get a coronavirus vaccine” in Maryland. Meanwhile, those above 21 in New Jersey can avail of the “Shot and Beer” program. (Uh, cheers to that!)

Apart from the vaccine, we can now add all these inventive incentives as something positive (no pun intended) coming out of this COVID-19 nightmare.

At least 70% of the population need to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. So, if you want to win a cow, then it’s a “moos-have” to get the jab.
