Divine Lee’s Uterus, Fallopian Tubes, And An Ovary Had To Be Removed After Childbirth

• Last October 10, 2021, celebrity and entrepreneur mom Divine Lee-Go successfully delivered her third child, Dali, after going through a high-risk pregnancy. She had to be on bed rest for three months before giving birth due to placenta previa, which she later revealed could lead to a more serious pregnancy complication called placenta accreta.

  According to MayoClinic, the partial or total covering of one’s uterus or placenta previa makes one at high risk of placenta accreta where the placenta remains attached to the uterus even after giving birth. This causes excessive blood loss and other life-threatening complications such as kidney and lung failure.

  Divine had mentioned in an earlier vlog that if she is confirmed to have it, there is a possibility that her uterus will be removed. She even told her doctors, “If it’s between life and my uterus, gosh take it out! Nagamit na siya well!”

  Planning for the worst scenario

  

  The mom shared her birthing journey in a vlog uploaded on her YouTube channel on October 31. She went to the hospital two days before her target date for a cesarean section to get some tests done, like getting a blood extraction and checking how quickly her blood clots.

  She admits that she found it hard to leave for the hospital — “You know that feeling na aalis kayo tapos hindi ka sure kung uuwi ka and then you see your kids… [I thought] ‘Will I survive?’

  “We made it but it was scary. I remember packing for the baby and packing for myself. Tapos kailangan ko i-pack yung going home clothes namin from the hospital and parang naiiyak ako kasi iniisip ko kahit na ano pang suot ko, basta makauwi lang ako… Sana makauwi yung baby,” she recalls.

  While she remained positive, Divine still planned for the worst scenario. She even prepared a ‘life sheet’. “Nagbilin na ako so may excel sheet ako ng… password, ng insurances, ng properties, ng everything…” the mom shared.

  Of course, they didn’t have to use it because Divine relied on God and her doctors. “Everything else I can prepare for… but the rest of my worries, I really just have to… ibigay sa dasal,” she says in her vlog.

  She adds, “You just trust your doctors. You believe in them. And they didn’t fail me.”

  Total hysterectomy 

  

  Apart from undergoing blood tests, Divine also had to be cross matched with “walking donors,” or individuals who will donate their blood before her cesarean section. Because of the possibility of excessive blood loss due to placenta accreta, Divine needed donors who not only had the same blood type as her but also passed the cross-matching with her blood to avoid any more complications.

  The mom did all these while working — even going on a livestream for a makeup brand! Finally, on October 11, Divine was able to give birth to Dali safely.

  Divine had to take a few days to recover — she had low blood and experienced vomiting and dizziness. She also had to have another blood transfusion and was sensitive to light. Thankfully, she and Dali were cleared to go home.

  Once at home, Divine shared more of her journey. She revealed that she had to consult with a psychologist because her OB-GYN wanted to make sure that she was ready to make the decision of taking out her uterus.

  Divine had already stored her eggs before marriage and her three pregnancies were done through in vitro fertilization or IVF. (Read here.) She said that she has always been open to the possibility of having children through surrogacy, so it wasn’t an issue for her, but she still followed her doctor and consulted a psychologist.

  As for the outcome of her surgery, Divine shares that she didn’t get contractions, and her operation went as planned and started on time.

  She was also shown a photo of the placenta. It was attached to her uterus, Fallopian tubes, and one of her ovaries, so doctors were left with no choice but to remove all three organs.

  According to Mayo Clinic, this procedure is called a total hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy, where one or both ovaries and Fallopian tubes are removed along with the uterus.

  Despite what happened, the mom remains cheerful and even joked about the outcome of her surgery. “Ang iniisip ko na lang sana maging Thalia ako, ‘di ba? Siyempre, tinanggalan ka na ng laman loob, sana lumiit naman yung waistline ko,” she said.
