When Typhoon Maring recently hit the Philippines, it caused much damages in provinces up north. Among those badly affected was La Union, which is home to Bettinna Carlos, her daughter Gummy, and her husband of nearly one year, Mikki Eduardo.

Bettinna took to Instagram on October 13, 2021 to let people know how she and her family are doing. “Hello!!!” she said in the caption, “We are well!!!”

The actress also shared what kept them busy while the storm was raging on: “After 2 nights may kuryente na kami. 34hrs is the longest we have gone without electricity and water in our faucet.

“Where we had to manually pump the poso for water to cook and wash the dishes, fan ourselves to sleep (2nd night lang kasi 1st night maulan at malakas pa hangin so parang aircon din) and make use of whatever source of light we had for reading and cooking. Hello sa after breakfast pa lang ay nagluluto na ng pangdinner kasi may liwanag. Hehe!”

Bettinna went on explaining how the seemingly dire situation turned out to be an instructive experience, especially for her daughter, who grew up in the comforts of Metro Manila.

She pointed out, “This was an answered prayer actually na maranasan ni Gummy ang brownout parang nung bata kami ni Mikki. Walang generator. Ang difference lang ay dati flash light ngayon recharchable shoot lights ni daddy.

“May gripo kami nung bata at ngayon ay poso lang. Talagang mano mano. Nagiigib kahit umuulan. Nagpupuno ng drum para may reserba. Nagsasalok ng tubig sa balde at tabo para maghugas ng pinggan. 3x a day so kamusta naman ang mga balakang.”

She added, “We thank the Lord na naranasan to ng anak namin. I know dasal ng mga magulang na dumaan sa challenges ang mga anak nila m-big and small as opportunities to train them for life.

“Para tumibay sila. At matutuo. Na hindi lahat madali at laging convenient. Na ang mga bagay ay may hangganan at nauubos. Na dapat maging wise sa paggamit ng resources at hindi porque masagana ay parang unli itrato. Na hindi ka entitled to live comfortably.

“Na makita at mabilang ang mga biyaya sa lahat ng sitwasyon – we were dry, safe, our food in the ref didnt spoil (mabuhay ang panasonic ref!!! Hehe), we had stuff to cook, had food on the table, ate comfortably, still had mobile data for internet for schooling and a car to charge our gadgets…”

She made special mention to some friends “who offered us to fully charge all our lights and laptops” and expressed her gratitude. “Thank you Lord for the blessings of this brownout. Thank you that we can give thanks in all things. May You provide as well for others in more challenging situations.”

Bettinna ended her post with a friendly reminder to all: “Walang karapatang sumimangot, uminda o magreklamo.”

She also wrote a postcript about how her daughter diligently studied with a limited light source: “Lakas maka”SUNOG NG KILAY” ng photos from our first night. It was a pleasant sight for me to see my child go through this brownout experience and watch my husband respond with joy&grace.TYL!”
