Pfizer Says Its COVID-19 Vaccine Safe For Ages 5 To 11 Years Old

• Great news for parents!

  Pfizer and BioNTech have announced that their COVID-19 vaccine is safe for kids 5 to 11 years of age.

  In a statement on their website released September 20, 6:45 PM, Philippine time, Pfizer said that “In participants 5 to 11 years of age, the vaccine was safe, well-tolerated and showed robust neutralizing antibody responses.”

  This was the result from a Phase 2/3 trial that included 2,268 children ranging from 6 months old to 11 years old. Unlike the 30-microgram dose given to minors 12 years and older, the dosage was smaller at 10 micgrams. The two-dose regimen was administered 21 days apart.

  As for side effects, it was “generally comparable to those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age,” according to Pfizer. There were no instances of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, that has been linked with mRNA vaccines, reports CNN.

  Pfizer says that results on their trials for kids under 5 years old will be released later on this 2021. At the moment, the company plans on submitting their data to the regulatory agencies of the different countries.

  In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) has authorized Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to be used on minors 12 years old and older, but because of the limited supply of Pfizer in the country, local government units (LGUs) around the country have only opened registration for minors, but have not started administering it. Pfizer vaccines are also given to those on top of the priority groups, such as health workers and frontliners.

  Other companies, such as those producing Moderna, have begun their COVID-19 vaccine trials, but are yet to come out with their results. Our local Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to decide on whether or not to grant SINOVAC’s application for an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) on individuals 3 to 17 years old.

  Vaccinations for school-age kids brings them closer to transitioning to a combination of online learning and face-to-face classes. The Department of Education (DepEd) announced today that President Duterte has approved holding face-to-face classes for 120 schools. Even with the approval of the President, each parent must give written support and consent for their child to attend face-to-face classes in any of the chosen pilot schools.

  More importantly, vaccines for kids will definitely give parents peace of mind and relief that their children are finally protected against the deadly virus.
