Ang Ganda At Aliwalas! Son Gifts His Mother With A Modern Tropical Home In Cavite

  • It’s every child’s dream to give back to their parents — whether it’s by treating them to an all-expenses-paid trip or giving them something they have always wanted. For Marvin Oloris, his gift was to build a house where his parents can unwind and entertain guests.

In a post on the Home Buddies Facebook group, Marvin’s mother, Gigi, shared that the modern tropical house is her “homespun happiness,” where her kids and their friends also hang out.

In an interview with SmartParenting.com.ph, Marvin shares that the house was completed in five months and is the result of the whole family’s collaboration. “My mother has many inputs, as does my father. We brainstormed about it for more than a month before applying for a building permit,” explains Marvin, who also is the creative director of MARO / ORTEGA Design, the design team behind the project.

Located in Bacoor City, the house started as a bungalow and the project revolved around extending it vertically to give the owners a view of the outdoors. Taking inspiration from majestic canopy trees, Marvin shares that the design firm came with a tropical-inspired design to complement the Philippine climate.

From the windows and roofing, to the balconies and materials used, they made sure that the house remains cool and comfortable especially during summer.

“My mother was happy about it. While she has inputs that weren’t realized due to design and budget constraints, she has all the ceilings, walls, and floors to decorate, which is something I’m sure she’d be happy to do,” says Marvin.

Since the existing house already has a kitchen, a bathroom, and a space that serves as a gym, the extension project focused on creating more space that can accommodate the family’s guests, relatives, and having an entertainment area. Should they decide to rent it out in the future, it won’t be a problem, too.

Marvin’s mother, Gigi, loves staying in this part of the home where she can just sit, relax, and look at the garden.

The house extension was built using steel, wood, and other composite materials because the bungalow wasn’t designed to carry an additional load of reinforced concrete.

For those who wish to work on a house extension or build their own home, you can look into incorporating jalousie windows into the design. “It’s better fitted in a tropical climate,” Marvin explains. Many homes have jalousie windows as they allow proper ventilation which help keep the home cool.

The balconies of the house is covered with artificial grass, turning them into instant tambayan spots. “It makes the house more refreshing, masarap po tambayan for small talks and board games with loved ones and families,” shares Mommy Gigi on Facebook.

Mommy Gigi was in charge of sprucing up the house. On the second floor, it’s all about family bonding and creating a space for watching movies or videoke.

Gigi chose to furnish it with colorful seating pieces, tables, and cushions. To complete the fun vibe, she also mixed and match the décor used on the walls.

After completing this project for his mom and their family, Marvin feels happy and grateful. “They allowed me to experiment on their home, which is something not to be taken for granted. I tried my best to come up with a good design, lead its construction with safety and efficiency in mind, and make them feel satisfied with the result,” he shares.
