Dishwashers may be a foreign concept in Filipino households, especially as families assign the chore to their older kids to teach responsibility. Not to mention, the appliance can come with a steep price tag.
But for couples with young kids, it can become a lifesaver, especially when both parents are working and without helpers around. Dad Joel Hilario certainly thinks so, as he makes the case for the Tekno TDW-7000TIX dishwasher (Php31,500 via Shopee) on the Facebook group, Home Buddies.

To see if their usage is worth it, Joel even computed their monthly ‘operating cost’, which amounts to around Php1,500, including electricity, water, and detergent consumption. Of course, this added expense may be a little too high for some, but for Joel’s family, there’s actually one factor that makes the dishwasher “priceless.”

“I regularly do the cleaning of the feeding bottles of Jewel and Jorie to help my wife. Say I save 20 minutes a day washing the bottles, that’s an extra 10 hours for me. That is more than 1 workday, and enough for me to finish an extra job to recover the operational expenses of using the dishwasher and more,” Joel explains.
He adds that they no longer need a kasambahay, whose major task in their household is to wash the dishes, since the couple can also do the other chores with the help of automatic appliances.
Joel notes that before buying the dishwasher, Arcie would take at least an hour a day to finish all the dishes. She washes them every night, since she is preoccupied taking care of their three children.
He says, “For her, that 1 hour a day she saves is a lot! Thirty hours a month she saves in time is like extra free weekends in a month. She can do anything she wants with the extra time — rest or do a hobby — but she’s just happy to have extra time to play or do other activities with the children. Priceless!”
“Dividing time between 3 children really is difficult most of the times, so we really are grateful for the extra free time,” the dad adds.
