Children as young as 12 years old will soon be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) chief Eric Domingo said Wednesday night, May 26, 2021, that they could be amending the emergency use authority (EUA) given to Pfizer-BioNTech “within the week.”
The amendment will allow expanding Pfizer’s use from just adults to include children 12-15 years old.
“Sa (United States) FDA, na-approve na po ito at ginagamit na po sa mga bata sa Amerika,” Domingo said as an update for President Rodrigo Duterte.
This announcement was made during the Chief Executive’s weekly Talk to the People broadcast.
The FDA in the United States gave its nod to allow the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on children on May 20.
“Early this evening, I already got the recommendations of our experts and it’s very favorable,” Domingo said.
“So ‘pag dumating po ‘yong maraming in-order…na mga Pfizer, maaari na po itong gamitin sa mga batang 12- to 15-year-olds.”
Pfizer is one of seven vaccines — plus another pending application — the FDA has given a EUA on adults in the country. There are 16 vaccines available worldwide.
All these vaccines are on EUA “because there is no fully developed vaccine anywhere in the world that has been registered for.”
None of the vaccine manufacturers have a license to commercially sell the vaccines. Hence the roundabout way governments are procuring them and the strict regulations on their use.
Four vaccine brands are currently being used in the Philippines.
As of May 24, some 8.279 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been delivered to the country, according to data of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Operation Center. Over 4.169 million doses have been administered as of May 23.
