Single Mom Says Potty Training Her Son Is Easier With This Urinal: ‘It’s A Lifesaver!’

  • Experts say that the best time to potty train your child is when they show interest and signs of readiness. If you force it too early, it might cause more harm than good.

One way to encourage children to use the toilet is to buy the right equipment, including a child-size potty. Your toddler can claim it for his own and will make him feel more secure and comfortable than using a full-size toilet, according to Baby Center.

On our parenting community, Smart Parenting Village, mom RJ Bataan, 33, shared a useful budol find: a urinal that features a cute rabbit design, which she bought for her 2-year-old son Kite Yuno.

In a quick interview with SmartParenting.com.ph via Messenger, RJ shares that she decided not to put too much pressure on her son when it came to potty training. “I actually bought a [different] potty trainer when he was 24 months old, but since he was not ready and not showing signs or eagerness to use the potty, I didn’t put too much pressure,” she shares.

“I just let it sit in one corner of the room until one day, I caught him peeing in the potty. He was also surprised and exclaimed, ‘I’m doing it, mommy!’”

But when Kite started to become more interested going to the toilet on his own, it became important to find the right tool that would fit his needs. RJ shares that she specifically searched for a urinal since her son seems to prefer peeing while standing.

Apart from the adorable design, RJ says potty training her son became easier with this tool. It’s also useful since their bedroom is at the second floor and they do not have their own toilet and bath inside.

“Moms who have a potty trainer can surely relate with how tedious it is to always clean and empty the bin after each use. I love this urinal because unlike the others, it has an option where you can connect a hose so you can direct it to the toilet drain or to a bigger catch bin which can save you time from frequently cleaning and emptying the bin,” RJ shares.

“It has a wide opening, so you don’t need to worry about accidental spills. It’s a life saver for me,” she adds.

The height is adjustable, plus you can let it stand or hang on the wall. At Php550, RJ says it’s “budget-friendly considering the quality.”

RJ says that her son, Kite, enjoys using the potty trainer. “Sa sobrang enjoy niya, nung bago pa lang ‘yung urinal, maya’t maya niya gusto mag-wee wee,” the mom shares with a laugh.

If you have a toddler son, RJ says to exercise patience when it comes to potty training. Accidents or slip-ups will happen.

She shares that what personally helped them was when she stopped putting a diaper on Kite when he started to show signs that he was ready for potty training. “There were instances na inaabot na siya ng wee wee and worse, poo sa floor, pero I guess, that’s when he really learned to control,” she shared.

“Don’t force your child. While it helps ‘pag lagi natin sila tatanungin if they need to poo or pee and show them where and how to do it, let’s not put too much pressure,” she says.
