Actress Heart Evangelista’s relationship with her mom, the equally beautiful Cecilia Ongpauco, looks rosy, as evident in Heart’s Mother’s Day episode on her YouTube channel, Love Marie Escudero. The vlog, which was uploaded this June 21, 2021, also features Heart’s sister Camille.
When Heart opens the episode and introduces her mom, she actually reminds us of the last time we saw Mommy Cecilia. Heart calls it “that horrible interview” when Cecilia sat with the media to appeal to Heart not to push through with her relationship with her now-husband, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
“That (interview) was a nightmare,” Mommy Cecilia agreed.
Heart Evangelista’s childhood
Between cooking, mother and daughters exchanged banter, jokes, and stories about their relationship and what it was like growing up in the Ongpauco home.
As Camille sauteed ingredients, Heart and her mom recalled how the Ongpauco children were made to work at their famous Barrio Fiesta restaurant to learn the ropes of the business. Mommy Cecilia said Camille used to sit on top of Coca-Cola boxes as she was the “kahera” that time while Heart, for her part, joined the singing waiter in their repertoire.
Comparing the two siblings, Mommy Cecilia says Camille was the more responsible one. “She (acted) older than her age,” she says. “But Heart was truly young. I mean really young,” referring to Heart’s more playful and happy-go-lucky persona being the family’s bunso.
Mommy Cecilia says Heart would paint their house walls red and play with her clothes, high heels, and makeup. She narrates how Heart wore her spiked heels one time and climbed on top of their glass table and fell, hitting her eye.

Growing up in a very strict household
On a serious note, Heart says she and her siblings grew up in a very sheltered environment with very strict parents. “Not a lot of people know how we were raised. You only see the finished product,” Heart begins. “We had a bodyguard that had a list of where you’re going, sinong sumakay….”
Camille then adds, “We were never allowed to ride in someone else’s car. Di rin pwede yung classmates kasi wala nang space sa car kasi ang daming bantay.” Growing up, Heart adds, she didn’t get where her parents were coming from until she learned her mom also grew up in a very sheltered environment. Mommy Cecilia reveals she never even learned how to cook because her parents didn’t allow her in the kitchen.
“Hindi ko magets yung ganyan — yung mga ‘why are you hanging out with her? What’s that word you’re using?’ Pero now nage-gets ko kasi (I now know what my mom) went through in her life. I guess, parang at the end of the day, we have our different ways of protecting our children. You try to make sure that nothing bad happens to them,” explains Heart.
Mommy Cecilia on Chiz and Heart’s marriage
These days Mommy Cecilia and Heart are finding themselves on the opposite sides regarding their relationship statuses. While Heart has been happily married to Sen. Escudero in the last six years, Mommy Cecilia is finding new life in being single.

It prompted Heart to ask her mom whether she is ‘happily single or taken.’ To which the matriarch answered, “Happily single.”
Need proof that Mommy Cecilia has accepted Sen. Escudero as Heart’s husband? When Heart asked her mom for marriage advice for her and the senator, her mom readily replied, “You’re fine. You’re happy.”
“You know what I like about your marriage?” Mommy Cecilia offers, “You allow each other to grow. (He) doesn’t stunt your growth.”
When Sen. Escudero joined the vlog, Mommy Cecilia says, “I think you don’t cramp her style, so I think that’s what’s good about (your) marriage. (Chiz) allows her to mature and grow on her own.”
If there’s anything we can take away from Heart’s most recent vlog with her mom, it’s this: All’s well that ends well — at least in the Ongpauco household.
